The second phase of Rio Tinto’s Cape Lambert Port B Project is well under way, involving the development of a new iron ore port facility. It is one of the largest resource projects ever undertaken in Australia.
Adjacent to Cape Lambert Port B, is the existing Cape Lambert Port A facility, completed in 2009, that enabled Rio Tinto to double iron ore shipping capacity from the Pilbara between 2003 and 2009 to 220Mtpa, The current port expansion will support increasing the export capacity of Rio’s Pilbara operations to 330Mtpa by 2016.
The project has been awarded high commendations as part of the Australian Engineering Excellence Awards for Resource Development.
